Q & A with Endurance MTB’er extraordinaire and Squirt Cycling Ambassador Josh Tostado
Josh Tostado shouldn’t need any introduction. He is a true MTB legend having excelled in ultra-endurance mountain bike events and setting the standard for more than a decade. To top it off he’s a pretty nice guy too and seeing as he’s too humble to toot his own horn, we thought it about time someone did!
Josh has won 4 x 24Hour National US Champion titles and 7 x Breckenridge 100 titles amongst countless other achievements. He’s clearly made out of tough stuff and thrives on extreme challenges. Squirt Cycling Products is proud to have him as an Ambassador and roped him in for a Q & A session. This might be his toughest challenge yet…;)
Who is Josh Tostado?
I’m 46 years old and I love riding and racing my Mountain bike.
Where is home?
My usual home has been Fairplay, Colorado for the last 25 years but after my daughter was born I have been living in Vermont in the summer and Tucson Arizona in the winter for the last 2 years.
When did you fall in love with bikes?
I moved to Colorado for bigger mountains and better skiing in 1996 and discovered mountain biking in the summers there. I’ve always loved riding bikes though from the time I could ride one as a kid.
What is it that attracts you to the sport?
I love the freedom to move through the mountains quickly and the terrain that you can ride on a mountain bike - especially now - is just incredible.
Sushi definitely is my favorite food.
Strangest food you were thinking of while riding?
I usually don’t think of strange stuff, just normal stuff like ice cream, pizza and salted chips.
I used to be superstitious and I had a lucky sweat band but I stopped wearing it somewhere along the way so I guess my luck stayed about the same.
What do you always take on a trip?
I do most of my travel and racing in my sprinter van that I self-converted to an RV so I usually take everything on all trips.
What would you be if you were not a racer?
I think I would probably be a chef, I’ve worked many years in restaurants and have always loved to cook.
You’re favourite Squirt Cycling Product?
Well that’s a tough one, so many great products. Obviously the lube is great but the barrier balm has saved my ass on many occasions. Literally and figuratively.
Best tip for MTB beginners?
My advice to a beginner mountain biker would be that it’s supposed to be hard, the fact that you are really out of breath and feel like you’re going to die means you’re doing it right. Also don’t get frustrated by crashing or falling down, even the best mountain bikers in the world still do that, it’s just part of it.
I like my coffee…strong
I would love to go ride with…Danny MacAskill
The Secret to happiness… is doing what you love every day.
My greatest exhilaration… is standing on top of a mountain after a two hour climb to get there.
I fear… not being able to do what I love every day.
My Passion… is being outside in mountains.
When I wake up...the first thing I think about is coffee.
I wish… more people could discover how amazing riding a mountain bike is.
I rage……I rage when people are bad drivers.
